Today is 'Poem In Your Pocket' day. If you carried in a poem in your pocket, which would you carry? Why would you keep that poem in your pocket?
 Some people ordered a pizza with 20 slices. Each person ate the same amount of slices. How many people ordered the pizza and how many slices did each person eat? 11 Comments  I was at the store when I saw they had headphones on sale for $2. Of course I had to scoop them up into my shopping cart! How many headphones do you think I bought and how much did I probably spend?
 I actually took a course in college on how to play tennis! The summer I learned how to play a can of tennis balls cost about $10. Needless to say, I went through a lot of cans because I kept losing them when they went off of the tennis court. How many cans do you think I ended up buying that semester and how much did they cost me?
 Four of my friends came over the other night. One of them is a master brownie baker! She cut the brownies so the 5 of us could eat the same amount. How many brownies were each of us able to eat? How many brownies did she cut in all?
 As you know, I am frequently at Barnes and Noble ~ at least twice a week! During my recent visit there, I spent $24 on books. Because of my educator's discount, each book cost the same. How many books did I buy and how much did each book cost?
Round & Round We Go11/21/2011  I just finished reading a book, Into Thin Air, about a group of people that climbed Mt. Everest. I learned some really interesting things while reading the book. Did you know that mountain is 29,035 feet tall, and that the wind blows 118 miles per hour?!? About how tall is Mt. Everest to the nearest hundred? About how hard does that wind blow to the nearest ten? Explain your thinking.  When working with complex problems we are using a process called KWCS. This helps us think about a problem so that we understand what we Know, Want to know, what the Conditions are, and then a possible Solution. The chart to the right is how we worked through this process together and is also included in our Math Notebook.  My husband and I went to see the Whale at the Hartford Civic Center. It was a Saturday night and so the stadium was pretty busy. During the third period the emcee announced the total number in attendance at the game. We were shocked when we heard the amount because it was the highest number in attendance we had ever heard! The number was in the thousands. With a few catches ... There was a 4 in the hundreds, and the attendance was less than nine thousand but more than five thousand. How many people attended the game that Saturday night?  We know that towns locate businesses and services for a reason. Think about the places you travel and how far away they are from your house. Choose one and explain why you think it is or isn't in a good place in town.  We know that towns put businesses, services, and homes in certain places for particular reasons. Look at another group's map and infer why they put something in the place they did. Use evidence from the map to explain. |
